1. Where is your hometown?
I’m from Can Tho, which is a city right in the heart of the Mekong Delta. It’s roughly three to four hours from Ho Chi Minh City by bus, depending on the traffic. Most people know it for its floating markets and, of course, the rivers everywhere.
2. What do you like most about your hometown?
Band 7+: Honestly, it’s the pace of life. Things are much more laid-back than in Saigon, so people actually have time to sit down and chat over a coffee. And the food’s fantastic – you can get a really good bowl of noodles for next to nothing.
Band 5.5: I like the people in my hometown. They are very friendly and kind. And the food is very delicious and cheap. I like it very much.
Bản 5.5 trả lời đúng câu hỏi nhưng ý chung chung, lặp “very” bốn lần (“very delicious” cũng không tự nhiên vì delicious đã mang nghĩa mạnh) và chỉ dùng câu đơn. Bản 7+ nêu lý do cụ thể (the pace of life), có ví dụ đời thường và cách nói tự nhiên (laid-back, for next to nothing).
3. Has your hometown changed much since you were a child?
Yes, quite dramatically. When I was a kid, there were hardly any tall buildings, and we used to cycle to school along narrow, bumpy roads. These days there are shopping malls everywhere, and the traffic seems to get worse every year. It’s more convenient now, but I do miss the peace and quiet.
4. Is your hometown a good place for young people?
It depends on what they’re looking for. If you want a calm life and a low cost of living, it’s great. But in terms of career opportunities, it can’t really compete with the big cities, especially for people working in tech or finance.
5. Would you like to live in your hometown in the future?
Maybe later in life, yes. For now, I’d rather stay in Ho Chi Minh City, because that’s where most of the jobs in my field are. But once I’ve saved up a bit, I can definitely see myself moving back and opening a small café by the river.
Part 3: 4 câu hỏi thảo luận
1. Why do many young people leave their hometowns to move to big cities?
Band 7+: I’d say the main reason is economic. Big cities simply offer far more job opportunities and higher salaries, so graduates feel they have to move there to build a career. On top of that, the best universities tend to be concentrated in major cities, which means many young people leave home at eighteen and never really come back. There’s also a lifestyle factor: cities have more entertainment, more cultural events and a sense that things are happening.
Band 5.5: I think because in the big city have many jobs and the salary is higher. Young people want to earn more money, so they go to the city. Also the city is more modern and have many things to do, like shopping and going to cinema.
Bản 5.5 có ý đúng nhưng mắc lỗi ngữ pháp cơ bản (in the big city have → there are; the city… have → has; going to cinema → going to the cinema) và chỉ liệt kê. Bản 7+ sắp xếp ý thành ba lớp (kinh tế → giáo dục → lối sống), mỗi lớp có giải thích, dùng mệnh đề quan hệ which means… để nối ý.
2. What can be done to keep small towns attractive to young people?
I think the key is creating decent jobs locally. If the government offered tax incentives to companies that set up offices or factories in smaller towns, young people wouldn’t have to leave to find work. Improving public services matters too – good schools, hospitals and fast internet. Now that remote work is more common, a town with reliable internet and a lower cost of living could actually become quite attractive to young professionals.
3. Is it important for people to stay connected to their hometown?
Yes, I think so, mainly because of identity. Your hometown shapes your accent, the food you love and even your values, so losing touch with it can leave people feeling a bit rootless. That said, staying connected doesn’t have to mean living there. Going back for Tet, following local news or supporting local businesses online are all ways of keeping that link alive.
4. How do you think towns and cities will change in the next 20 years?
I’d expect them to become a lot greener, partly because of climate change. Many cities are already struggling with flooding and extreme heat, so I think we’ll see more parks, more trees and better drainage. Transport is likely to change as well, with more electric vehicles and, hopefully, better public transport. The downside is that housing may become even less affordable if cities keep growing at this rate.
Vì sao các câu trả lời trên đạt band 7+?
- Fluency and Coherence: Part 1 trả lời thẳng ngay câu đầu (Yes, quite dramatically. / It depends on…) rồi mới mở rộng. Part 3 có khung rõ: ý chính → giải thích → ví dụ hoặc mặt trái, nối bằng On top of that, That said, The downside is… thay vì Firstly, Secondly.
- Lexical Resource: collocation tự nhiên theo chủ đề (the pace of life, cost of living, career opportunities, tax incentives, lose touch with), kết hợp cách nói thân mật phù hợp Part 1 (laid-back, for next to nothing).
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy: có câu điều kiện (If the government offered…, young people wouldn’t have to…), mệnh đề quan hệ, used to cho thói quen quá khứ, once I’ve saved up – đa dạng nhưng không gượng ép.

Dùng các cụm: hardly any, cost of living, lose touch with, that said, the pace of life.
- I moved to the city for work, but I don’t want to ______ my relatives back home.
- There were ______ cafés in my neighbourhood ten years ago; now there’s one on every corner.
- Rent is so high in the capital that the ______ is a real problem for students.

Đáp án và giải thích
1. lose touch with – mất liên lạc, mất kết nối với người thân ở quê.
2. hardly any – đi với danh từ số nhiều đếm được (cafés), tương phản với “now there’s one on every corner”.
3. cost of living – “rent is so high” là gợi ý về chi phí sinh hoạt.
4. That said – chuyển ý ngược lại sau một nhận xét tiêu cực.
5. the pace of life – collocation “the pace of life is slow/fast”.
Tóm tắt nhanh
- Part 1: trả lời thẳng câu đầu, thêm 1–2 câu lý do hoặc ví dụ cá nhân.
- Part 3: đi theo khung ý chính → giải thích → ví dụ hoặc mặt trái.
- Dùng collocation theo chủ đề (pace of life, cost of living, career opportunities) thay vì “very + tính từ”.
- Không học thuộc thông tin địa lý.
- Chú ý các lỗi thì cơ bản như born and grew up, has changed.
